A District Special Education Attorney Needs Support

“Given my professional experience, I felt confident I could navigate the special education system for my own child. I quickly realized I needed help. Jenn helped shift my perspective to see the process clearly through a parent’s lens while clarifying our rights from the same perspective. She was incredibly thorough, carefully reviewing hundreds of pages of assessments, progress reports, and IEPs. More importantly, she helped me become a stronger advocate for my twice-exceptional child by identifying opportunities to strengthen goals and avoid limiting expectations. Jenn emphasized that my child should not be limited by a rigid “grade-level” ceiling, but deserves to make meaningful progress based on their unique strengths.

What truly sets Jenn apart is her forward-thinking approach. She didn’t just focus on our immediate IEP, she encouraged us to think 10, 20, even 30 years ahead, with the goal of building a life full of choices and fulfillment for our child. Jenn brings deep expertise, an insider’s perspective, and genuine compassion.  I have known Jenn for many years, and I trusted her to help us make some of the most important decisions for our child’s educational future.  We are incredibly grateful for her help and will seek her counsel again in the future.”

School Refusal is Not Fine

“I have worked with Jenn for over 3 years for my 2 kids with very different needs. Jenn was instrumental in getting an IEP for my 2E child who was clearly struggling and had school refusal but was deemed “fine” by the school because his grades were ok. With both of our kids, she helped us understand our rights and get organized to present our case to the IEP team. I felt so much more comfortable having Jenn on my side at the meeting.

After the IEP meeting, she explained everything very clearly and wrote a list for me for the next year and to help our son’s transition and his new teachers with what he has been struggling with. I learned so much from Jenn about the school system, IEPs, what to look at in schools and how to communicate with school admin. It has been an invaluable experience.”

DOE Providers Choose Jenn Choi Advocates Too

“As a related service provider for the DOE, I thought that I knew enough about the IEP process to advocate for my daughter’s needs. My daughter accepted an offer to a specialized high school in 9th grade, and she had an IEP and a recent, private neuropsychological evaluation. The evaluator strongly recommended an assistive technology (AT) evaluation, so we requested one from her high school. I called Jenn when the specialized high school sent us a notice for an IEP meeting without performing an AT evaluation or even meeting my daughter. Jenn helped us understand our rights and skillfully guided us through a series of complaints and meetings until the DOE provided the evaluation and supports that our daughter needed.”

Training Students Real World Self-Advocacy

“As parents of two high school students with unique disability profiles—including one with a complex, evolving medical condition—we faced the daunting challenge of securing profound IEP reevaluations for both children in the same school year. We could not have achieved the comprehensive outcomes we did without Jenn. She was essential in organizing the process, keeping us on schedule, managing the IEP meetings, and—crucially—teaching us about our children’s educational rights.

Jenn opened our eyes to the full range of services available, guided us through the many bureaucratic obstacles, and advocated for our children with a tenacity we could not have maintained alone. We are deeply grateful to her not only for helping secure the kids’ IEPs and for helping us survive the process, but even more for showing our children what real-world self-advocacy looks like—all while walking them through the experience with kindness and understanding.”

From Crisis to College: Guided by Experience

“I am not exaggerating when I say that Jenn is at the core of why my son is now graduating from high school on time and going on to college. Two years ago he was struggling and not able to attend school at all. At first we thought we could figure out how to access resources on our own, since we had dealt with the DOE for our first child. However this situation was different, because our son was in high school we only had a short time to act. Jenn knew the unwritten rules – who to contact and how to push without alienating people. There is nowhere to find this knowledge online – it only comes from deep experience and Jenn has it. If we didn’t have Jenn, our son would not have received such timely and appropriate help.

Jenn was in close contact with us, keeping us on track. Her presence at meetings was an incredible asset. She was my ally and gave me confidence. She has a bright, positive presence, but also holds people accountable and asks the right questions. Our son got the emergency help he needed and Jenn’s recommendations led us to find a better school placement for him where he has thrived. When I went back to his original high school, the guidance teacher confided that she had never seen any student get the DOE response my son received – and that’s because Jenn knew who to contact, when and how.”

From Newcomer to Navigator

“When we first moved to NYC, Jenn helped me quickly get up to speed on the complexities of the special education system. She explained each step clearly and helped me understand what to expect, what to prioritize, and how to advocate effectively. Her guidance helped me feel much more confident during meetings and decision-making.

I did not know anything about the special education system in New York. Jenn had a strong grasp of how everything worked—from IEP services to government programs and evaluations—and helped guide me through each step. She explained what to apply for, when to do it, and who to contact. Her knowledge saved me from having to figure it all out on my own and gave me a better understanding of how to navigate a very complicated process.

Jenn was highly organized and action-oriented. She reviewed my child’s work closely and helped pull out key pieces of evidence that strengthened our case. She was also very directive, which helped keep things on track and gave me a clear sense of what needed to be done next. Jenn was a fierce advocate who didn’t hesitate to speak up and challenge decisions when needed. She was always well-prepared and made sure the school understood our concerns and documentation. Her deep familiarity with the system allowed her to speak the school’s language and ensure nothing was missed.

We worked together for about three years. After IEP meetings she helped outline the next steps and often provided suggestions for next-level strategies or referrals. Jenn encouraged me to be more assertive and confident in IEP meetings. Watching her advocate also gave me a better understanding of how to push for what’s needed while staying grounded in documentation and student needs. Her recommendations, such as working with a particular neuropsychologist, ultimately helped us secure services we had been seeking for years.”
